I Have Never Become a Lover

My heart was born first, then
I came along.
I have never become a lover.

There was a time
When I would ask myself
About purposes and ends.
Sitting in corners, lost and shy
I protected made-up shrines.
I have almost died once
and died many other times.
I have kissed sweetness
and bitterness
Danced with angels
and embraced even the fallen ones.
I have felt like giving up
But faith dwelt in me.

I got drunk, inebriated,
then infatuated.
But I have never become a lover.

I might feel unable to express
Feelings in my speech.
But when I say you are my heart
Those are not just words of reverie.
I have dreamt about places
Who knows if I’ll ever see.
In fact nothing really matters
When I close my eyes
and surrender to that which simply is.
I have talked to animals
To insects and the wind,
I hum that love song
Because I know you’re listening.

I have never become a lover
My heart was born first, then
We came along.
